Mattress topper vs new mattress: when foam is enough

Thickness, foam vs latex, and the failure modes a topper cannot fix — so you do not waste money on a Band-Aid.

What a topper can fix

Toppers shine when the support core is fine but the surface is too firm or too slick. Two inches of gel memory foam (Linenspa is the usual Amazon workhorse) takes the edge off. Three inches remakes the comfort layer for side sleepers with shoulder pressure. Latex toppers trade hug for bounce and often sleep cooler than dense memory foam.

What a topper cannot fix

Sagging coils, deep hammocking, collapsed edges, and a mattress past its useful life. If you wake with lumbar pain that disappears in a hotel or on a couch, more soft foam can make spinal alignment worse. Protect any mattress you keep with a quiet waterproof protector — spills and sweat age foam faster than people admit.

Budget ladder we actually use

Under ~$50: egg-crate or thin foam for a short trial. ~$50–$120: 2–3" gel memory foam. ~$170–$250: natural latex (like Pure Green) when you hate memory-foam sink. $200+: TEMPUR-Adapt when you want signature conforming foam without replacing the whole bed yet. Always measure depth and buy sheets that stretch over mattress + topper.
